What the market looks like
AI automation engineering is where traditional RPA and modern agent-driven AI are converging. We track several thousand automation-focused postings in the US annually, and the shape of the role is shifting quickly — UiPath, Power Automate, and Automation Anywhere still dominate the stack, but the most senior roles increasingly call for Python, LLM orchestration, and agent-framework fluency alongside them. Base compensation lands in a $120K–$210K range for mid-senior ICs, and the strongest AI automation engineers we see think in processes first and platforms second.
Job responsibilities
Design and build AI-enhanced automation solutions that combine RPA with modern LLM-driven reasoning
Own end-to-end automation delivery — from process discovery through production operation
Integrate UiPath, Power Automate, or Automation Anywhere with OpenAI, Anthropic, or equivalent model APIs
Partner with process owners to identify candidate workflows and measure business impact
Build evaluation and monitoring for AI-driven workflow components
Contribute to the organization's AI automation reference architecture
Rework and modernize existing RPA estates as LLM and agent capabilities mature
Mentor junior automation engineers and raise the bar for the craft internally
Candidate requirements
4+ years in RPA or automation engineering — UiPath, Automation Anywhere, Power Automate, or Blue Prism
Hands-on experience extending automation platforms with LLMs and modern AI tooling
Strong Python and SQL, comfortable with REST APIs and enterprise system integration
Experience across at least one major cloud (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
Strong process mindset — can articulate and redesign a workflow, not just code one
Clear communication with both technical and business audiences
