Job market data
C-level AI appointments remain rare — we've tracked fewer than 100 true Chief AI Officer postings across the United States in the past year — but almost every major enterprise now has an explicit line item for AI leadership on its org chart. Existing CAO roles cluster across Professional Services, Financial Services, Healthcare, and late-stage Technology, and compensation is almost always packaged on a confidential total-comp basis rather than a posted range. The strongest CAO candidates bring a rare combination of technical credibility, strategic range, and C-suite gravitas — all three have to be real.
