What the market looks like

Over the last six months, we've tracked 100+ executive-level postings in AI strategy across the US, concentrated in technology, professional services, and financial services hubs like the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, and Texas. Organizations are increasingly seeking fractional Chief AI Officers to shape strategy without the overhead of a full-time hire—especially during pilot and early-scaling phases. The strongest candidates bring deep experience building AI programs from the ground up, translating technical capability into business value, and earning trust from boards and C-suites. Compensation for fractional engagements in this cohort typically ranges from $250–$350 per hour, depending on scope, depth of involvement, and strategic impact.

Job responsibilities

  • Own the development and execution of the organization's AI strategy, including roadmap prioritization, resource allocation, and alignment with business objectives.

  • Partner with the C-suite and board to define AI governance, risk management, and ethical guardrails.

  • Lead assessment of current capabilities, identify transformation opportunities, and design phased implementation plans.

  • Build or advise internal AI teams, establish talent pipelines, and drive skill development across the organization.

  • Drive adoption of AI tools and platforms; remove organizational and technical blockers to scale.

  • Represent the organization externally—speak on panels, engage with vendors, stay current with market trends and emerging AI capability.

  • Provide ongoing strategic counsel on emerging opportunities, competitive positioning, and investment decisions.

Candidate requirements

  • 10+ years of experience building, scaling, or leading AI/ML initiatives in enterprise or high-growth environments.

  • Proven track record translating AI capability into measurable business outcomes (revenue, efficiency, competitive advantage).

  • Deep fluency in modern AI/ML technologies, tools, and architectural patterns; ability to evaluate vendor solutions and technical roadmaps.

  • Executive presence and board-level communication skills; comfort advising C-suite and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Experience building and scaling teams, establishing governance frameworks, and embedding AI across functions.

  • Strategic mindset: comfort with ambiguity, ability to prioritize high-impact opportunities, and history of driving organizational change.
