What the market looks like

We've tracked 1,100+ senior-level innovation postings across the US in the last six months, with concentrated hiring in New York, California, and Texas. Financial services, technology, and professional services firms are the strongest hiring segments. Compensation for directors of innovation typically ranges from $180,000 to $230,000 at the median, with top-tier roles reaching $380,000. The strongest candidates combine deep experience launching new products or business models with the ability to build cross-functional teams, translate between technical and business stakeholders, and operate comfortably in high-ambiguity environments—especially as organizations scale innovation efforts around emerging technologies.

Job responsibilities

  • Own the innovation strategy and roadmap, defining which new technologies, products, or business models the organization should pursue and how to allocate resources against them

  • Build and lead a team of innovation managers, strategists, or researchers, setting direction, mentoring talent, and creating a culture of structured experimentation

  • Partner with C-suite and business unit leaders to translate market opportunities and emerging tech trends into concrete initiatives and business cases

  • Design and run structured processes for idea evaluation, prototyping, and pilot validation—ensuring the organization learns fast and kills failed bets decisively

  • Integrate innovation work with product, engineering, and go-to-market teams to move validated concepts from lab to revenue impact

  • Track and report on innovation KPIs—pipeline health, time-to-pilot, pilot success rates, and revenue or cost impact—to demonstrate business value

  • Represent the organization externally: speak at industry forums, build relationships with startups or technology partners, and stay current on competitive and adjacent-market moves

Candidate requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in innovation, product development, strategy, or business transformation, with at least 3+ years in a director-level role or equivalent scope

  • Proven track record launching new products, business lines, or capabilities—ideally ones that moved from concept to material revenue or cost impact

  • Demonstrated ability to build, scale, and lead cross-functional teams and influence leaders at the C-suite level

  • Comfort translating between technical possibility and business value; experience working closely with engineering, product, and data teams is essential

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to simplify complexity and tell a compelling story to both internal executives and external audiences

  • Experience designing and running structured innovation processes (stage-gate, design thinking, lean startup, or similar) and measuring outcomes against clear metrics
